Research Question
I am trying to learn about sex trafficking because I want to find how sex trafficking violates article 1 in the universal human rights, in order to help inform my reader of the violations against woman rights of their own bodies.
How are womens rights violated because of article 1?
How do we evaluate the will of womens rights over their bodies when many willing chose this life style?

The Congo Today

The issues that are discussed in the article I found are about a huge rebel group accused of rapping hundreds of innocent civilians in July and August of this year. They have been arrested for these accusations. They have had a hard time proving these rapes but have some what of 500 men, women and children victims. People think that this is just another event that adds to the deteriorating Congo. I agree in a sense because it seems like one after another another terrible event or injustice occurs that just tears the Congo down.
With so many possible victims how is there a question whether or not these rapes happened? Is this a result of a corrupt government system?

Class Discussion
1. A question that is still lingering after the discussion is, was Leopolds incentive in not giving Africans the right in money transactions to keep them from gaining power or simply because he thought they could not handle the power?
2. Our group worked well together, however, sometimes the conversation felt dominated. Although there were opportunities to talk it felt un-valuable. Most discussion questions did lead to meaningful conversations.

Chapter 1: King Leopold's Ghost
"Underlying much of Europe's excitement was the hope that Africa would be a source of raw materials to feed the Industrial Revolution, just as the search for raw materials, slaves, for the colonial plantation economy had driven most of Europe's earlier dealings with Africa" (Hochschild 27).
This quote supports what we have been discussing in class. It shows how the Europeans used Africa to expand their resources and to benefit Europe and the Industrial Revolution. They wanted an imperialistic power over Africa primarily to gain power and resources.
Also, it shows how the Europeans viewed imperialism. "But Europeans liked to think of themselves as having higher motives. The British, in particular, fervently believed in bringing 'civilization' and Christianity to the natives" (Hochschild 27). They liked to believe that their motives would benefit the Africans and the Europeans.

- What is Stanley's significance and relation to King Leopold?
- Why does Stanley like to make up events in his past that never happened? And does he engrave them into his history in which he believes they are true?

What I learned in class Sep. 2, 2010
In class today I learned a lot of information about imperialism that I did not know about before. I was not aware of all of the colonizing countries, colonized countries, countries exercising imperial power, and countries affected by imperial power. I also became very informed about Europe from 1871-1914. About how they colonized many countries in Africa and what their motives were.

Taliban poison attack or mass hysteria?
- What's being discussed in this article? This article is discussing whether these attacks on Afghan schools are because super conservatives do not want women being educated or if it is mass hysteria violence.
- When did the event happen? (Is this breaking news or something that's been analyzed and discussed for a while?) The article was written on August 25, 2010. This is breaking news of another attack on Afghan schools, however the attacks have been occurring since 2006. So it has been discussed for the reason why they are being attacked.
- What questions do you have that would help make this article make more sense to you? What more do you need to learn about to be able to report on this event? I would like to know more about attacks against women in Afghanistan, and how often they occur to stop women from being educated.

Events we remember...
Events I remember:
1. 911: I remember I first heard about it on the radio on the way home from school in third grade.
2: Hurricane Katrina: In 7th grade. I remember it because it was such a big event that is still talked about on the news.
3. Oil spill in the gulf: This event is so memorable because it is so current, also because it affected so many people and animals.
Events my Dad remembers:
1. Martin Luther King was shot: Just got home from school and saw a news bulletin. Was killed 60 miles from where my Dad lived.
2. George Wallace, the governor of Alabama was shot for blocking the military when entering the University of Alabama: Grew up in th south, there was so much negative publicity about him and was not surprised when he was killed.
3. Nixon resigning: Supported Nixon in 6th grade, was disappointed when the Water gate scandal occurred. He was disappointed because he supported him as a small 6th grader.
